Our closest star system to us, we're neighbors! The system consists of 3 stars: Alpha Centauri A & B (that make up a binary star system!) and Proxima Centauri (or also know as Alpha Centauri C). The binary stars create a close orbit to one another, and Proxima Centauri orbits around the pair. Alpha Centaur is ~4.3 million light years away from earth, with Proxima being slightly closer at ~4.2million light years. This makes Proxima the closest star to planet Earth!
In recent years of research data supports the proof of exoplanets (planets outside of our solar system) within Alpha Centauri. Astronomers are able to assume the compositions of these exoplanets based off of the light wavelengths sent back to Earth.
